History of Beef in Korea
|
| History
of Cattle in Korea—The native cattle of Korea,
known as Hanwoo, evolved from crosses between humped cattle
(Bos indicus) and aurochs (Bos primigenius) that migrated
to the Korean Peninsula from northern China about 4,000
years ago (FFTC 2001). Cattle were used primarily as draught
animals, but the residents of the Korean Peninsula also
had a history of eating beef from very early times. As
in China, the development of iron tools led to more extensive
use of cattle to pull iron ploughs.
